Course description: Spanish IVH is a continuation of the study of the Spanish language and culture, with the exception that all instructional delivery is presented in Spanish. It is also required that the students practice with the target language on a daily basis. I do NOT wish for students to be fearful of the course but I also wish for students to understand that the only way to learn a language is to use a language. You can do it! Do not panic (I have been there, done that :) Every day with consistent practice you will find yourself improving and that in itself is exciting!
Benchmarks: these are the skills that we expect students to reach with consistent and applied practice, in class, out of class and with guidance from the classroom teacher:
Students will be assessed using a TOTAL POINTS SYSTEM.on a variety of tasks including quizzes, tests, projects, class assignments and focusing on the four major skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The semester’s grade is derived on the following distribution:
Quarter 1: 40%
Quarter 2: 40%
Final Exam: 20%
MATERIALES REQUERIDOS:
EXTRA HELP: is available to any student who is experiencing difficulty, or simply wants some extra guidance. I am happy to make arrangements with students on an individual or group basis. Extra help is not an obligatory task. Students MUST be self-advocates, I cannot make you “want” to improve, it comes from you alone. That said, speak up, I am here to help!

Benchmarks: these are the skills that we expect students to reach with consistent and applied practice, in class, out of class and with guidance from the classroom teacher:
- students will be able to speak about contemporary Hispanic cultures and practices (to include: food/cuisine, art, literature and daily life), compare and contrast traditions and cultures.
- students will be able to describe themselves and others, and use descriptive language across all verb tenses (past, present, future) and modes (indicative, imperative, subjunctive).
- students will read a novel in the target language, participate in discussions, provide reactions to plot, accumulate vocabulary and respond to comprehension inquiries.
- students will participate in cultural exploration to include aspects of geography, daily life, current events, popular culture, music and more.
- Spanish / English dictionary! You MUST have your own copy, you need to learn how to use them and having access to your own will help you in this regard. Ask for suggestions, I have plenty of favorites!
- Composition notebook specifically dedicated for our work in this class. Please choose composition style, I will collect them regularly to assess work, grade written assignments etc.
- Book: El Prncipe de la Niebla de Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Yes! We are going to read a whole book this semester! You are going to feel such a sense of excitement and achievement! Again, do not panic, we will incorporate class time to help with reading strategies, vocabulary practice and reflection and comprehension It is available both in hard copy and as an e-book, If you know any of our students from last year’s Spanish 4 classes you might ask to buy their copy.
- Thumb drive (usb)
- A good and adventurous attitude!! It is impossible to be passive in a foreign language class, every day we will speak, listen, read, write and practice, practice, practice. Plan to enjoy yourself and have fun while you learn.
- Academic integrity: here, as in life integrity and honesty is expected. TRANSLATOR use is absolutely prohibited, is easily detected and will be returned with a grade of 0 for submitting work that is not yours.
- Your absolute best effort: understand that I have been in your seat and I know how hard it is to acquire a foreign language. However, you are the only one responsible for learning and practicing the language. I am here to support you, but you are here to learn.
- Punctuality to class: it’s simply professional
- Preparedness: it’s simply professional :)
- Support of your classmates! We just agreed that learning a foreign language is difficult! Support, encourage one another, celebrate the small things, you will be surprised at your growth!
