Course Description:
Spanish 2 is the continuation of Spanish 1, intensified. During this semester you will continue to study vocabulary (approximately 500 new words!) as well as go much deeper into the structure/grammar of the language. Our focused practice will highlight the 4 skills of language acquisition: speaking, writing, reading and listening. Your goal for being here is either: a) to prepare yourself to proceed to level 3 Honors (highly suggested for college candidates!) or b) to complete your obligation to the curriculum pathway required for college admission.
Benchmarks: a “vistazo” (view) of what we will facilitate student learning and expected outcomes:
Grade distribution/policy:
Students will be assessed on a variety of tasks including quizzes, tests, projects, class assignments and an individual portfolio focusing on the four major skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will be assessed using a TOTAL POINTS SYSTEM. Grades will be updated/posted weekly in PowerSchool. Interim reports will be sent home every 4 ½ weeks in order to properly monitor student progress. Student work submitted after the due date will be penalized 10 percent per day up to no lower than a 50 percent. Late work will not be accepted after the interim cut-off dates and the resulting grade is a 0.
The year’s final grade is derived using the following formula:
Quarter 1: 40%
Quarter 2: 40%
Final Exam: 20%

Benchmarks: a “vistazo” (view) of what we will facilitate student learning and expected outcomes:
- student will be able to introduce him/herself, express likes and dislikes, describe extracurricular activities, school and home life, communicate ideas related to shopping and clothing, as well as news and weather events, errands and activities in the community.
- student will be able to communicate in a variety of verb tenses, to include present, present progressive and past, using narrative tone to describe childhood events and practices as well as future hopes and plans.
- students will practice communicating across mood as well, to include: indicative and imperative moods.

Materiales necesarios
- Spanish/English dictionary: each student should have their own copy, not a class copy
- Pencil or pen, every day!
- Notebook or binder with paper, dedicated only to this course
EXPECTATIONS:
- TELEPHONE /ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY: ALL telephones, earbuds, headphones, and electronic devices MUST be put away out of sight (ie: backpack) BEFORE any student enters the classroom. If at any time the item becomes visible (even if the student is not using it), it will be confiscated and turned in to Mrs. Davenport at the Front Desk for parent pick up only. This is non-negotiable. Student’s refusal to surrender device will be responded to with Admin call to classroom.
- Applying and practicing the four skills of language acquisition is critical for your advancement. Tasks, assignments and tests will be administered to gauge your progress in: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- Homework: will be given regularly. Foreign Language is just like a sport. It must be practiced beyond the classroom to improve. Consider homework your practice before the big game.
- Translators / plagiarism: STRICTLY prohibited. The use of translators is the same as copying someone else’s paper; it is simply not your work. Evidence of ANY academic integrity (sharing homework, copying tests, translator (yes this means Google too!) usage will be awarded a grade of ZERO and parent contact).
- Textbook: we use a textbook when necessary, Realidades 2, primarily for the purpose of thematic vocabulary. Students should take notes daily in class as they should rely more on inclass instruction than a text.
- Website: http://www.ramspanish.webnode.com Find the Spanish 2 tab. My goal is to post daily tips for topics we are studying, culture tips and other games, activities or puzzles to help advance your study. A calendar with homework and announcements on timely events (exams, projects, etc.) will also be available.
- Remind 101.com: Your code for remind101.com this semester is ramsp2. Please text @ramsp2 to #81010. Please encourage your parent to do the same. It’s free, safe, one-way texting and helps students to remember the important stuff!
- Extra help/tutoring: During the Fall semester I am available most days after school and anytime before school if not on duty. I appreciate and believe that students should advocate for themselves when they find their coursework difficult. I cannot chase you or make you want to succeed. However, if you ask for help, I am here for you!
- WCPSS policies: all policies as directed by WCPSS (dress code, phone usage, absenteeism/tardy, etc.) are adhered to in our class. Please be sure that you are aware of your responsibilities as a student.
- Keys for success:
- SPANISH will be used as an ACTIVE piece of our classroom experience, daily. Do expect to use it, both in listening and communicating in our class. You can’t learn to swim in a classroom; you can’t learn to speak or understand Spanish by using English.
- Come to class every day. PARTICIPATE. Passive kids do NOT succeed in FL.
- Sleeping is a waste of time and a guaranteed F. You can’t learn what you can’t hear.
- Understand that there is no “magic bullet”. To succeed in this class you will need to apply yourself, study daily, do homework and stay attentive!
- Give 100% the first time, every time. There are NO retakes or test corrections for grade improvement. This is high school and we are preparing you for real life.
- SPANISH will be used as an ACTIVE piece of our classroom experience, daily. Do expect to use it, both in listening and communicating in our class. You can’t learn to swim in a classroom; you can’t learn to speak or understand Spanish by using English.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS:
- Appropriate classroom behavior is EXPECTED, not requested. Raise your hand to be recognized, ask permission to leave your seat, say please and thank you. It’s the Rolesville way.
- Ask questions! Chances are very good that one of your classmates wanted to but didn’t and is now thankful you did! ☺
- Be a leader. You KNOW what is right and what is wrong. Take the high road. That too, is the Rolesville way.
- Remember that if you have done the very best that you can you have much to celebrate and be proud of. This class is challenging! Understand that and be patient with yourself. You WILL see improvement if you work with me!
